"There must be some way out of here" said the joker to the thief

"There's too much confusion", I can't get no relief

Businessmen, they drink my wine, plowmen dig my earth

None of them along the line know what any of it is worth.

"No reason to get excited", the thief he kindly spoke

"There are many here among us who feel that life is but a joke

But you and I, we've been through that, and this is not our fate

So let us not talk falsely now, the hour is getting late".

All along the watchtower, princes kept the view

While all the women came and went, barefoot servants, too.

Outside in the distance a wildcat did growl

Two riders were approaching, the wind began to howl.

Saw the band many, many times around NW London in the '60's. First time was at the National Jazz and Blues Festival at Windsor Racecourse c 1965. Was completely blown away by them. Jess Roden had the most fantastic voice. I remember "Watchtower" first being played at Cooks Ferry Inn, Edmonton. Spellbinding. They were a truly great band who never got their true recognition. Still play their vinyl today.

In my opinion with Jess's voice being backed up with the full sound of the band, trumpet and saxophone, this is the definitive version... I heard it long before Jimi's version which doesn't come close....

Yes!! I learned about that last week when I was researching all the versions and knew the story ... Going to record my version of it on the 26th of this month .... I recorded our practice 2 nights ago and posted it. Check it out if you like. If you don't like it it's ok. Cheers and blessings ... TY for putting this up! Xo ~Jaq

this version was recorded BEFORE the Jimmy Hendrix version, he actually heard the ABS playing it in the studio next to his and recorded his hit version.
