Does anyone else know that feeling, when you hear music which is so beautiful that you're able to feel it in your body and your soul, to get you in another world and change your whole consciousness ? That's supposed to be that feeling if you hear "The 13th Floor Elevators". They were the first band, who used the word "psychedelic" in their music. Well, in my opinion they were the first and of course also the best "psychedelic rock" band in music history and surely one of my favourite bands out there. I mean, if you know what Roky Erickson (singer of the band) all has been through, then you just love this band and particularly Roky Erickson. He is also one of the most underrated rock 'n' roll legends around the world. Sadly the career of "The 13th Floor Elevators" stopped in 1969 because of drugs and everything. Roky Erickson had to spent a time in prison and been through strange things there. After all that he fell in a deep hole and became schizophrenic. He thought that someone follows him all the time, heard voices and noises in his head and said "Please stop this damn noises in my head, I would be so happy". Then over the years, he was so depressed that he just sat at home and watched cartoon films all the time. It's an interesting story about him and the band and everything and that's why he is one of my biggest inspirations. Since 2005 he feels much better and is on stage again. This song (actually a cover of Bob Dylan) is just one of my favourite ones and i tried to change the quality and made it clearer, a bit louder and so on. Then I thought I will make a little video with a few pictures of "The 13th Floor Elevators", members of the band and of course Roky Erickson. I hope you like it.

I get this: "when you hear music which is so beautiful that you're able to feel it in your body and your soul", but, regarding the Elevators, I only get with the tunes that don't have the jug, like this one, which is a total spine tingler. As is most of Bull of the Woods.

I beg to differ about them being one of the best psychedelic bands ever, they are one of the best bands in any genre ever! For me, tied with Modest Mouse prior to Good News...

well, everything is a matter of taste.. There are better versions.. to me, a liking for an person would not necessarily mean I like what he does.. I guess one must take in something to like psyche music..

Haha, funny comment, man, but, maybe you understood that a little bit wrong. Such people like Roky Erickson just inspire me that much because they have gone through very hard times in their life's and made simply astonishing things, I mean, listen to this fantastic music. That braveness of these great people just inspire me and that's what I meant, you know ?

ShuffleBassT, you wrote "... drugs... prison... schizophrenic... depression... It's an interesting story about him and the band and everything and that's why he is one of my biggest inspirations." Your standards for personal hero really need to be re-evaluated.

Sure we know the feeling. Your comment is almost as heart warming as the unforgetable interpretation of this song. Thanks for sharing the song and your thoughts about it.

Technically* the Holy Modal Rounders used the "word" psychedelic in their 1964 version of Hesistation Blues, but truthfully the 13th Floor Elevators were the 1st group to label their music with it- 1965s "The Psychedelic Sounds of the 13th Floor Elevators" So your statement they were they first to use the word in music is incorrect, but your heart is in the right place hehehe ;p Also, Roky never went to prison, just Rusk maximum security mental facility where they gave him shock therapy! facts!
