With all do respect, this is my 3 dogs favorite song, of course I love it too. However cows give the most milk when they play Elvis. Have they heard Ernie?I better stop at an Oregon Dairy Farm and tip them off. Money on Ernie !

You'd look far and wide to find a better version of this song, and you know what, you wont! Tennessee Ernie along with Bing Crosby, the two greatest voices of the 20th. Century. no one can or ever will replace either of them!

What can someone say that will do this man and this performance justice? Just thrilling and incredibly moving. If you want to see what really made this giant of a man tick, watch the documentary, Amazing Grace, put out by Bill Gaither. Ernie Ford was one of the few true stars in the history of the entertainment industry that stood up for his Christian faith and wouldn't compromise. God blessed him for it. A true hero.

The Real Deal, Ernest Jennings Ford was an American Original, whose likes we might never see again. Possessed of a phenomenal bass-baritone voice, he became an American icon with the release of his famous "Sixteen Tons" in 1955, which I played on the juke box as a young sailor. In the year 1965 Ii had the pleasure of seeing the live telecasts of his daily San Francisco production on local television station KGO-TV. In one particularly delightful presentation, he performed several arias with his old voice teacher from the Cincinnati Conservatory of Opera, and ---- MYGOD! ---- what a powerful voice this man projected! He will never be replaced, either on the music scene or in the hearts of those who were privileged to hear him sing.

This ranks with Jo Stafford's version as the joint best. See "Jo Stafford - Shenandoah"

I guess anyone who grew up by a river can identify with this. I did. My river was my playground for many many years. A Tom Sawyer and a Huck Finn I was and never wanted to grow up and probably never have. I still go back and look at those places from more than a half a century ago and still feel I'm there again. Hey... This is a beautiful song and is sung magnificently. Pardon me reminiscing to begin with. But isn't that one of the most wonderful qualities of great music and of beautiful song? That it can take you back and put joy in your heart and it can do it over an entire lifetime.
