One of the most beautiful renderings of a classic jazz standard by one of the most creative and under-appreciated jazz talents of the 20th century. Mr. Eli "Lucky" Thompson spent much of his musical life flying under the radar, but the depth of emotion in his playing was ever present, especially on ballads such as this one. Recorded in 1956, this video pays tribute to the late Mr. Thompson and a bit of homage to the city of Paris.

recently I've been a bit obssessed with this standard and I've listened a lot of different versions. It's a truly lovely song that seems to inspire a lot of musicians, so there are many beatiful interpretations (with some strange exceptions, Louis Armstrong for instance sounds like he doesn't know what to do with those romantic harmonies), but to me this is indeed one of the best I've heard so far. Thank you for the upload.

Gosh, that's a beautiful Tenderly interpretation and record treasury from Lucky. Thank's for sharing. Tragically, Lucky died poor, with Alzheimer, and without orientation and lost in Seattle. But he still gives us his wonderful and most talented music to listen. God bless, and R.I.P. Lucky.

He recorded this one on the superb album that he did in Paris at that time. Other gems included "East of the Sun", "I Cover the Waterfront" and (my favourite) "Indian Summer" Lucky and the English sax player Freddy Gardner were two of the best. Wonderfully smooth and understated, yet very deep and emotive playing. Lucky Thompson in Paris circa 1956. Now that's a real high point of ultra sophisticated, mid-20th century pop culture. Things are so dull and ordinary nowadays.
