This song by the late John Denver can be found on his "Different Directions" album This is the time of year that our hearts turn home. Jesus is calling us to Himself. Make your heart His home and find your home in Him.

The lyrics:

Home, come on home

Ye who are weary come home

Softly and tenderly calling

Home, come on home

Sometimes when Im feeling lonesome

And no one on earth seems to care

Im all by myself in the darkness

With no one and nothing to share

Just when it feels like its hopeless

And Ill never make it alone

I hear the voices of angels

Tenderly calling me home

Home, come on home

Ye who are weary come home

Softly and tenderly calling

Home, come on home

I try to keep it together

I never let on that Im scared

Still sometimes I fall to pieces

Scattered and lost everywhere

Just when it feels like theres no one

To mend all my broken down dreams

I hear a voice deep inside me

Tenderly calling to me

Home, come on home

Ye who are weary come home

Softly and tenderly calling

Home, come on home

So dont be afraid of the darkness

And dont run away from the storm

Stand up and face your reflection

The feelings you try to ignore

After the tempest is over

Youve let yourself come on through

Youll hear a voice in the silence

Tenderly calling to you

Home, come on home

Ye who are weary come home

Softly and tenderly calling

Home, come on home

I grew up in churches that sang this song, and although everyone have their own belief about Christianity, I'm so glad he recorded this gospel song. I really believe John is a very spiritual man.

I have in the past wonder if John could ever do any gospel songs/albums... I can only wish there were more. One thing though is we need to find ways to witness to those who don't think the church is the answer when all we can do is sing a song that nudges them to find that answer in Christ.

My 89 yr old Mother had a near death experience last week and her relating of what happened sounded a lot like the words of this song. It made her feel so much more accepting of death when she realized how peaceful her passing will be.

As I said as the beginning comment to the huge response to the posting of "Tenderly Calling", this song appeals to many people of differing beliefs. I'm also glad that this song provides comfort to many folks, but the fact that the writer, Jan Garrett, takes a Christian song and takes out Jesus, means that this song is not particularly a Christian song. The voice inside us may be God, but it also may be the spark of the moral and spiritual self that we have developed within us. I am an agnostic, but I want this song to be sung at my funeral, whereas I would not be comfortable with "Softly and Tenderly, Jesus Is Calling."

I just had this song played at my husband's funeral on Dec. 31, 2013. Perfect. My husband was a retired Baptist minister. Not a dry eye in the church.

Yes, they are both from a lovely old hymn, "Softly and Tenderly."

This is very similar to a song called Softly, Tenderly Jesus is Calling. That song can be heard at the beginning of the movie called Trip to Bountiful. Both beautiful songs with a timeless message....

I love this song by John. I thought he wrote it but, he didn't. It was written by Jan Garrett and made popular by John.

This is one of my favorite songs by my favorite singer/songwriter. I miss his music. Have all his records - listened to this song 6 times yesterday on the way home from Tai Chi. Thank you for posting it.
