Your question posed an absurd absolute, so I provided an absurd response. Please point me to the many songs where Hendrix used a capo. Actually, any Hendrix song with a capo would suffice....unless of course he qualifies as a "marginal" guitarist and songwriter.

Using hyperbole to make a point? That's very clever. Did you you just come up with that idea yourself? Traditionally, capos are tools for guitar songwriters and those that didn't use them were marginal. You know this, you're just being cute.

I would include Howe as a songwriter, not just a guitar slinger. He has 9 or 10 solo albums and songs with lyrics...that's a songwriter in my book. And I agree, I don't consider capo or open tuning users as lazy, I was just making a point that musicians can be very close minded sometimes! ;-) They are both legitimate tools and techniques to further musical creativity. I personally use both frequently and love the sounds they make!

Yes, Steve Howe is clearly awesome, but I mean 'songwriters'. I don't think of Lennon, Cash, Browne, or Springsteen as 'lazy'. Some people use guitar to write songs that are memorable and some people practice all day to play for other guitar players, hoping someday that a songwriter will hire them. Someone could put down K. Richards for using open tunings, but I bet that's some kid with no perspective whatsoever.

Yes, it's absolutely true that ALL acoustic songwriters use a capo. Every single one of them, all throughout history. I am completely certain of this.

Not necessarily. Steve Howe of YES writes a lot of acoustic material and never used a capo in his life. Of course when I grew up, lots of people said that using a capo was cheating or for lazy guitarists, so what are you gonna do! ;-)

Isn't it true that traditionally ALL acoustic songwriters use a capo?

Relax. I'm not knocking Marc. If you want to believe he was a great guitarist, be my guest. He wasn't, but I'm not going to argue the point.

Ummm, I don't know how old you are, but Marc Bolan was definately a guitar hero. You know, being the writer, front man, the only guitar and playing while singing is different than copping licks in your bedroom, 40yrs later, right? Marc's extended soloing skills were quite limited, but guitar work on the recordings was just about perfect. ANYONE can learn to play fast scales over jazz chords but certainly not everyone was born to boogie.

$ 500 and I'll teach you how to attach a capo.

My two cents on the capo controversy...Marc CONSTANTLY used capos, from Tyranno right to the end the number of songs using capos easily outnumbers those without. That's why his guitar sound was so distinctive. Ride a White Swan is very similar to this riff and it's capo IV.

No. It was American music that made the English make all those classics. They learned how to do it almost as well as anyone could, by copying Americans. Rock & Roll- just like almost all things worth having- invented and perfected in the U.S.A.
