Slow SLIDE SHOW OF JONI & HER CATS: Nietzsche, Pansy, Mojo and El Café off the Album, TAMING THE TIGER. =^..^=

I stepped outside to breathe the air

And stare up at the stars

Big dipper hanging there

Over the rented car

Over the rented car

I'm a runaway from the record biz

From the hoods in the hood and the whiny white kids

Boring!

The old man is snoring

And I'm taming the tiger

(You can't tame the tiger)

Tiger, tiger burning bright

Nice, kitty kitty

Tiger, tiger burning bright

Sophia says "It's hard to catch

And harder still to ride

The time to watch the beast the best

Is when it's purring at your side"

Purring at your side

Accolades and honors

One false move and you're a goner

Boring!

The old man is snoring

And I'm taming the tiger

(You can't tame the tiger)

Tiger, tiger burning bright

Nice, kitty kitty

Tiger, tiger burning bright

In the forest of the night

The moon shed light

On my hopeless plight

As the radio blared so bland

Every disc, a poker chip

Every song just a one night stand

Formula music, girly guile

Genuine junkfood for juveniles

Up and down the dial

Mercenary style

I watched the stars chuck down their spears

And a plane went blinking by

And I thought of Anna

Wild and dear

Like fireworks in the sky

Fireworks in the sky

I'm so sick of this game

It's hip, it's hot

Life's too short, the whole thing's gotten

Boring!

The old man is snoring

And I'm taming the tiger

(You can't tame the tiger)

Tiger, tiger burning bright

Nice, kitty kitty

(Boring!)

Tiger, tiger burning bright

(You can't tame the tiger)

Oh, be nice, kitty kitty

(Boring!)

Tiger, tiger burning bright

Nice, kitty kitty

(Boring, boring!)

Tiger, tiger burning bright

(Fight to the light, fight to the light)

In the forest of the night.

What a beautiful and intelligent reflection about William Blake's poem The Tiger! It contains a lot of thoughts about the process of creation, both small (songwriting) and large (wisdom, religions).

@lebartonne just as Joni is one in a million...(or one in 6 Billion) Her entire expression is one that couldn't appeal to everyone. The World couldn't handle all the emotion or that many sensitive, intelligent, thinking people. She's not for everyone. Denying her, is just as arrogant as saying she is.

@horseytown You have some valid points. I don't like her bitterness, and if she just dwelled more on how many millions of fans she has .........

Get over yourself and just do what you do. She has sold millions of albums worldwide, continues to have a steady fan base, her influence is unabated, she has won nine Grammy Awards, I assume she is a multimillionaire... she should be a little more grateful (I don't recall Charles Mingus complaining about his own music being marginal). She might just be mistaken for a "whiney white kid" herself.

a rearrangement of 'A Case Of You') telling them to play more with their hearts and not their brains. Then claimed that her music was superior to that of her contemporaries because "I had a black sense of feel". Then claimed her loss of high rotation airplay to the fact that she got too arty for the masses ("I went to a minority camp") and recorded a Mingus album. This launched an assault on the state of mainstream music... Blech

how about you act your age and deal with it. And if you can't accept it, join it and try and understand it. If you can't do that - ignore it. It is not as if shitty commercial music is a new thing. I remember five or six years ago she was given an honorary degree at McGill Univ. here in Montreal and she managed to offend just about everyone with her condescension and arrogance (which is some trick given that it was at McGill). She berated the Faculty Jazz Orchestra (which had just performed..

I knew in high school who would dedicate far too much time and attention to what others were doing or listening to. If there is a tragic mistake to be made it is deluding oneself that one's interests elevate your existence over that of others. Yeah Joni, rap music (I assume what she was referring to as "hoods in the hood" - and I assume that "whiney white kids" was thrown in to pre-empt accusations of racism or being out-of-touch) is more popular than your brand of adult contemporary -

she seems entirely unable to come to terms with the fact that it won't get her mainstream top 40 radio play. And so, with the stink of elitism and pseudo-intellectualism, she berates the lowly masses for their failure to recognize her genius. These lines: "I'm a runaway from the record biz/From the hoods in the hood and the whiny white kids/Boring! ... Formula music, girly guile/Genuine junkfood for juveniles/Up and down the dial/Mercenary style" ...remind me of pompous "alt rock" kids...

While I am not about to argue that Joni Mitchell is untalented or failed to contribute significantly to popular music, I will argue that she has become an insufferable, bitter and self-important has-been that seems to value recognition, adulation and praise over doing what she must do to be the artist she needs to be. While she has not betrayed her desire to produce this sort of unlistenable tepid white jazz,
