David Byrne (vocals, guitar), Chris Frantz (drums, percussion), and Tina Weymouth (bass guitar, vocals)

Talking Heads was an American rock band that formed in the early 1970s and was based out of New York City. The group consisted of David Byrne, Chris Frantz, Tina Weymouth and Jerry Harrison. During later stages of the band's tenure, a number of auxiliary musicians were brought in on keyboards, percussion, backing vocals, secondary bass guitar and other instruments.

Talking Heads sound combined punk rock, pop, funk rock, art rock, and later in their career, world music. In David Byrne, they had one of the most distinctive front men of the period; they were extremely popular while they were originally together, and continue to influence many musicians to this day. Their concert film Stop Making Sense is acclaimed by many as one of the finest examples of the genre.

I know who booked them. A kid named Kevin MacKurdy.  No big money.  This is just what we did at Berkeley in those days in lower Srproul. It was fun.  We drank Steam, we smoked dope, we dropped acid.  Not like the wimpy kids these days.

Whoever booked those free concerts on Lower Sproul ought to be canonized. '78 saw the Talking heads, Johnathan Richmond, the B52s, Plus the Ramones up in the ASUC all in a few months.

Which show was this? They did two free shows in Sproul Plaza in 1978 (I cut class at Berkeley High to see them both); the second one was 35 years ago today, and at the end of it I ran into a friend who told me Milk and Moscone had been shot.

Thank you for posting this clip. Although I loathed what they would turn into, I still believe the "More Songs..." album is a work of 20th-Century Art.

I was actually at this show, and it was indeed in summer of '78 in Sproul Plaza. Best of all, it was a free concert! Can't believe there is any footage of this, so thanks much for posting!

I'm glad someone else thinks this as well, means I'm not too out of touch with the newer stuff.

I don't think this is 1978. I may be mistaken, but I believe this was taken in March of 1979. I had lived in Berkeley for years as a kid. My last day there, I was moving to NYC, was just hanging out up by the University. Lo and behold-The Talking Heads were performing. Had never heard of them...oh well, as they say the rest is ...

@frenzakenza This was the second show, in front of Zellerbach. Same day that Harvey Milk was killed, I believe. The first free show was in front of Eshleman Hall, along Bancroft.
