As incredible as David Shire is with this heart stopping score in this brilliant film, it still takes HUGE cues from the work of one of the greatest geniuses of American music of all time, the late Don Ellis.  Think I'm wrong?  Ellis did The French Connection 1 and 2 and The Seven Ups all before Shire did this in 1974.

Shire's score is a living, breathing, menacing character in the film, and one that you will not soon forget. Shire had only a few weeks to compose the entire score, which accounts for its 29 minutes of brevity-- and that's AFTER the producers of this CD release ADDED 15 minutes of music not included in the film! This looming deadline of limited time lead to Shire using a truncated musical method, the 12-tone composition, which limits the melody-line to 12 notes played in various orders. From this atonal jazz experimentation, he produced a sinister soundtrack of urgent drums, nervous scratchers and tinny trumpets which truly embodied the tics of terror felt by the victimized hostages on the subway train and the hero transit cops alike.Shire went on to score such gritty films as 1977's "Saturday Night Fever" and the Pelham-tense crime thriller, 2007's "Zodiac." His cinematic jazz-funk inspired scores of soundtrack composers and strains of his works (or samples, in some cases) can be heard on Beastie Boys tracks and definitely echo in Harry Gregson-Williams original score for the 2009 The Taking of Pelham 123 remake.

This track with with the visuals - money counted, bagged and transported - is some seriously tense shit! David Shire is Da Man.

Coole Musik, zu einem richtig coolen Film. Zu diesem lahmen Remake mit Travolta und Washington möchte ich lieber nix sagen.
