And I will stroll the merry way
And jump the hedges first
And I will drink the clear
Clean water for to quench my thirst
And I shall watch the ferry-boats
And they'll get high
On a bluer ocean
Against tomorrows sky
And I will never grow so old again
And I will walk and talk
In gardens all wet with rain
Oh sweet thing, sweet thing
My, my, my, my, my sweet thing
And I shall drive my chariot
Down your streets and cry
Hey, it's me, Im dynamite
And I don't know why
And you shall take me strongly
In your arms again
And I will not remember
That I even felt the pain.
We shall walk and talk
In gardens all misty and wet with rain
And I will never, never, never
Grow so old again.
Oh sweet thing, sweet thing
My, my, my, my, my sweet thing
And I will raise my hand up
Into the night time sky
And count the stars
That's shining in your eye
Just to dig it all an not to wonder
That's just fine
And I'll be satisfied
Not to read in between the lines
And I will walk and talk
In gardens all wet with rain
And I will never, ever, ever, ever
Grow so old again.
Oh sweet thing, sweet thing
Sugar-baby with your champagne eyes
And your saint-like smile....
"Sweet Thing" was released in the winter of 1968 on Van Morrison's second solo record, Astral Weeks.
Late last night I started watching a movie that I'd never seen before, The Five-Year Engagement. I was just getting into it, but very early on (for those of you that might have seen it before) there is a scene at a party where Van Morrison's "Sweet Thing" is used on the soundtrack. The instant I heard those defining opening notes thumping, I forgot all about the movie as the realization hit me that I'd not yet done a video from Astral Weeks! Although I'd actually created folders for some tracks in the first weeks of starting to make videos, it was at that time, pointless to finish one. Many months later I was able to create my first Van Morrison video ("Bulbs"...and a second one later "Redwood Tree") and I remember being so excited that I was going to be able to try something for tracks from Astral Weeks. Each time I thought about digging into something, I ended up stuck trying to decide which track to do first.....and eventually just forgot to go back there....until last night when I immediately knew which track I was going to try something for first.
I talk about how much I love these songs and albums all the time, but that it's taken me so long to get around to a track from Astral Weeks is really unusual, because this is probably my favorite album of all time....or because you know how "favorite album" can vary somewhat depending on the moment you are asked, at the very least it's been in the top three since almost the very first time I heard it. Only one other album, Pink Floyd's "Wish You Were Here" was an equal revelation upon first listen. This is music that is truly beyond description...it's an experience for your very soul. So, yeah....if you've not heard this entire album go immediately and listen to it from beginning to end.....and if you're one of those many fans such as myself for which it remains near the pinnacle of your musical existence....well, obviously you'll probably enjoy the tune, but I hope you enjoy the video I made for it a fraction as much.....after all, I stayed up WAY too late last night in a frenzy to get it done. ;-) (I guess the video might have benefited from some tightening, but it's just one of those that songs that I can't help but get carried away with!)
Feels great to have done a little something from at least one track from Astral Weeks....now on to "Madame George"! ;-)
....as a huge fan of The Waterboys, I do love their rendition as well, think I might mix the vid up a bit and see how that plays?
As always, SPECIAL THANKS to everyone who's art contributed to this new art....especially the photographer of the beautiful photograph of the beautiful girl (searched long and hard for the perfect "sweet thing"!) THANK YOU!!!!!!
And finally...THANK YOU!!! for watching.
