While Grieg did die in 1907, the phonograph was invented by Edison in 1877 and used mostly between 1880-1910 as a recording device. The particular recording I was referring to was recorded in 1903.

Grieg died in 1907 and recordings started in 1914

Don't let your arrogance cloud the dynamic nature of musical performance. "One of the best pianists" leaves consideration and admiration for other greats like Gould, Brendel and Pollini. It would be nothing short of daft to think there's competition in the arts.

So I'm no expert as far as piano and music and these musicians, but if you look up the videos of Richter playing Grieg's lyrical piece "to spring" and then the video of Grieg himself playing it, they are very different. So maybe he did occasionally do something different? (by "different" I mean to address you're most common complaint that Richter is not "creative" enough)

Oh man, I've read like 500 of your comments about Richter, give it a break already... You're a fine pianist and you probably know yourself that you are talking nonsense. Close your eyes and listen. Whatever his intents were, his music was beautiful.

One of the top 5 :)) No sir, he is not in top 5. There are excellent pianists, and top 5 like you said. Sviatoslav Richter is not there, he is Sviatoslav Richter and that is just that.

I'd agree with babyfade. When you say "he is the best ever" you should add "in my opinion". I love Richters playing, he wasn't interested in promoting himself, just in trying to convey what the composer intended. For me, some of his Schubert & Rachmaninov is as good as it gets. I have about 15 cds of his recordings & they are all first class, sometimes incredible. He's definitely one of the best but don't forget Horowitz, Gould, Arrau, Argerich, Pogorelich, Rubenstein to name a few.

I agree with you, but everyone has there own opinion. Having said that, I belive Chopin was a better player of his own music and composer for the piano, but Richter performs the best. ALso, it's always nice to hear a different speed or expression of a piece on occasion by other pianists.
