I wonder what happens in your mind/heart, when the singer gets to the highest notes, 'I ne--ee-ee--d your love.. I ne--ee--ee-d your love.. Susan, the Rightous Brothers bring me to TEARS, EVERYTIME I hear that part.. Any body that makes the effort to do that octave jump, makes the hairs on my arms raise.. As a musician, I surmise, the octave jump has a fair amount to do with it, plus the word, 'NEED" stretched out, the fact you're saying the word 'NEED'.. The stretching of it, and the notes, always tugs at my hearstrings, and I i magine many more people.. I guess the chords, and lyrics, and amazing melody all set you up for this moment.. Plus you isolate and spotlight it too, to draw more attention to it.. I had an original song, called 'I'd Count the Stars', a very pretty ballad.. I occassionally redo every once in a while.. The last singer had an amazing imagination when singing. He almost never sang the same way twice.. but he would come up with amazing adlibs.. Well he put this two octave climb into this phrase, mostly on one world,, It was amazing.. I rewrote the music to emphasize, it. I put in great rising brass part, which climbed with him, and then a pregnant pause.. It just magically came together.. I would get people gasping or saying 'oh my God' when they heard that section.. I really haven't been able to duplicate that feeling again. I'm not a singer.. and it really depends on the notes, used, the modal scale, the humanity and emotion of the singers voice to get you there.. Unchained Melody is a truly BRILLIANT song, and in the hands (voice) of a great song stylist, can acheive miracles..

Never cared for the Righteous Brothers' cover of this song--thoiugh I respect them as artists and performers. Still, this cover is haunting. It's amazing and serves to showcase Susan's amazing vocal talents, and the interpretation, reserved with a hint of power, is perfect.
