"Superman's Song" was the first single of the Canadian folk-rock group Crash Test Dummies and came from their 1991 debut album The Ghosts That Haunt Me.

LYRICS

Tarzan wasn't a ladies' man

He'd just come along and scoop 'em up under his arm

Like that, quick as a cat in the jungle

But Clark Kent, now there was a real gent

He would not be caught sittin' around in no

Junglescape, dumb as an ape doing nothing

[Chorus:]

Superman never made any money

For saving the world from Solomon Grundy

And sometimes I despair the world will never see

Another man like him

Hey Bob, Supe had a straight job

Even though he could have smashed through any bank

In the United States, he had the strength, but he would not

Folks said his family were all dead

Their planet crumbled but Superman, he forced himself

To carry on, forget Krypton, and keep going

Tarzan was king of the jungle and Lord over all the apes

But he could hardly string together four words: "I Tarzan, You Jane."

Sometimes when Supe was stopping crimes

I'll bet that he was tempted to just quit and turn his back

On man, join Tarzan in the forest

But he stayed in the city, and kept on changing clothes

In dirty old phonebooths till his work was through

And nothing to do but go on home

But superman did make money from saving the world. He gave Clark Kent the insiders of top news stories. Which no other news reporter could get. An he was paid for his news articles.

An old re-run of Due South brought me here, as soon as i heard the first few notes i knew it was this band, kinda unmistakeable voice lol. Gorgeous song though and the lyrics are bang on, i to fear we'll never see another guy like him, the time of a strong, decent guy with convictions and morals is over imo :-( RIP Superman, Christopher Reeves and all good, decent, people.

Why the Tarzan hate? That is a horrible comparison to Superman.

Great song, best song about Superman there is... but I'm pretty sure Solomon Grundy was a Bat Man villain.

This song is full of Symoblizim. Superman actually represents people with real hearts. People in the world who care for more than others. Who care for the poor (saving people) and even if they get nothing in return from them (superman never made any money saving the world). Tarzan represents the exact opposite. He represents people who care for only themselves (there own little jungle) and gets whatever he wants (Jane the girl, to be leader, etc) Truly a beautiful song.

This song is so inspirational and so true. So very true. So far there is no such song now adays that is this inspirational. It's so sad no one saw how amazing this song was before. Sad they had to quit because no one did see how amazing this song truly is.

Great song from 1992 (I think).  Whatever happened to those guys?

I never searched but to me the song could be about Dr. Jonas Salk, who invented the polio vaccine and gave it away for free. He passed up probably millions and , saved countless lives like superman. Never made any money either. U
