Superfamily - it's a lie

Superfamily is a seven-piece rock band who is proud to say their roots lie in Moss - a small and slightly butt smelling town in the South East of Norway. The band's original members are Steven Wilson (vocals), Kim Granholt (keyboards) and Martin Steffensen (guitar). In November 2002 the trio started out writing and recording songs at Fast Productions: A studio in Steffensen's living room consisting of a Windows 95-based personal computer and one microphone.

After some long discussions, Steven, Kim and Martin developed a set of rules for their songwriting. Some of the "no-no"s were using bluesy minor seven chords, or blowing a perfectly fine chorus to pieces by playing it a million times during the song. Some of the "yes-yes"es were using the same sounds on every track, and to create a musical expression based on contrasts; like using soft, three voice vocal parts behind an unpleasant, screaming lead vocal. Their goal was to systematically work with the song writing, treating the process as a craft as well as an art, with no room for coincidences or meaningless jamming. The trio wrote a whole concert repertoire according to these rules before they started recruiting more band members.

Because a drum set always represents a transport problem, plus the bizarre personality traits frequently seen in drummers, the trio originally intended to use a drum machine when playing live. However, when they heard drummer Tommy Christensen's killer drums, they immediately came to their senses and then they were four. Short after, three more talented young men were recruited; the singers Anders Nielsen, Haakon Moe and Agnar Lirhus literally danced their way in to the band. True to form, all new members were also from Moss.

The band's first live performance was at a small club in Oslo, Skuret, in May 2003. After this show, Superfamily would play as many gigs as they could, making the leap from being a trashy sounding punk rock band to a mediocre sounding rock band. None the less, their creative potential was rewarded with a record contract with Propeller Recordings. Soon after, they released the EP "Champagne", a record approximately 20 people have heard. However, six months later, Superfamily recorded "Back in Paris", their debut long play record. At release, the record received little attention by the press, and the record looked like it would die a silent death. But Superfamily kept on gigging all over Norway, gaining recognition for their now explosive live show, and the Paris tracks Taxi Dancing and It's a Lie were A-listed on the major Norwegian radio stations.

Suddenly, Superfamily was a major contender in the Norwegian music scene. The ability to drive any crowd nuts and two Alarm award nominations (best song: Taxi Dancing and best new act) was what Superfamily brought to the Bylarm Festival, the major forum for exposure of Nordic bands to the music industry outside of Scandinavia. Superfamily killed everybody with their two full house shows, and their status as one of Norway's best rock bands has begun to manifest. Superfamily is currently writing songs for their next record, which is to be recorded later this year. But before that, the band will be playing at most of the major music festivals in Norway.
