a half diminished chord is also called a minor 7 flat 5 . So really, I believe that half diminished and half diminished 7 are the same thing. As so often happens with chord notation, I think somebody left out the 7 in the chord name since it is implied by the half dim nature of the chord. This is not uncommon among the reefer addled members of the jazz playing community. Just say no.
