The Bohemian Girl

Michael William Balfe

libretto by Alfred Bunn

I dreamt I dwelt in marble halls

With vassals and serfs at my side,

And of all who assembled within those walls

That I was the hope and the pride.

I had riches all too great to count

And a high ancestral name.

But I also dreamt which pleased me most

That you loved me still the same,

That you loved me

You loved me still the same,

That you loved me

You loved me still the same.

I dreamt that suitors sought my hand,

That knights upon bended knee

And with vows no maidens heart could withstand,

They pledged their faith to me.

And I dreamt that one of that noble host

Came forth my hand to claim.

But I also dreamt which charmed me most

That you loved me still the same

That you loved me

You loved me still the same,

That you loved me

You loved me still the same.

Jessye Norman's semi operatic version is best. Sumi Jo is better in soprano roles.

Agree with Mr. Right. This is a beautiful non operatic version of the song. Particularly I found Ms. Sutherland's too operatic too-although I love opera. I prefer Elina Garanca's version when selecting an operatic one, marvelously delivered. I respect other's tastes but find Enya's version poor when compared with Sumi Jo's and Garanca's.

I must disagree with Sakuems. There are several good versions of this song on youtube including the dreamy Enya`s. Sutherland is just too high opera, but Anne Buckley`s is far from ethereal to my ears (compared to Enya or Sissel). Ms Buckley`s allows her sentences to drift away towards the end with awful delivery as if she is drunk or stoned. Sumi Jo is capable of giving this song more operatic style but here, I think, she delivers a nice mid-range version between opera and pop, while her clear delivery means you can understand every word. We can all agree I hope that it is a most beautiful song, one of the most romantic of its kind ever written.

I agree with Kathy Hunt. Listen to Elina Garanca for the most ethereal version of this song. Unfortunately with Dame Joan, she sounds like the marbles in the marble hall are all in her mouth

Actually, she does sound as if she were singing pop. I am not sure that this is stylistically appropriate in music written under the influence of Donizetti. Her performance is enjoyable none the less, but it is more crossover than opera.

She is very good. An incredibly versatile singer. Ironically, my favorite versions of this area comes from two non operatic singers. Sissel and Enya. This version will run a close contest though.

I sympathise rmcinuk - but I am also unbelievably jealous of you!. I'm older but I read that you've been a follower/adherent fan for 20 years. I'm also an amateur singer. For some reason I don't understand, I only discovered Sumi a month ago - & I'm absolutely hooked. And I can't find where she's performing nowadays .....

She can sing anything - & it's great. But this is her best; what a woman!

Doesn't sound 'pop' to me. Classical crossover maybe... but not 'pop'. Have you heard pop lately? It's like Katy Perry and Ke$ha, you know, people who casically can't sing.

Her diction, my dear is SUPERIOR to that of 95% of English-speaking Americans! I understood every word she uttered in song! I was born in Croydon, England where, according to history, the English language was originated. Considering that she was born in South Korea where the enunciation of words with certain letters in English stand the pronunciation only through a MIRACLE, she deserves an A+ for DICTION!
