Styx - Lights 1980

(Instrumental)

I heard the knock on my door

I heard the ring of the bell

I got the letter but I couldn't go

So many thoughts in my head

So many places to be

So many faces that I long to see

Standing in front of me tonight

The lights will take me where I long to be

Just like a thousand nights before

Somebody said to me

Why do you do this to you

Why not sit back and relax

Go to the islands and forget it all

Slow down, you're moving too fast

You seem afraid it won't last

Take my advice, go straight and settle down

Thank you for caring, but tonight

The lights will take me where I long to be

Just like a thousand nights before

I can't explain, it gives me something

Give me the lights, precious lights

Give me lights

Give me my hope, give me my energy

You can turn the wrong into right

Precious lights

Illuminate me, won't you let me play

Let me play

Won't you, won't you let me play

(Instrumental)

Give me the lights, precious lights

Give me lights

Give me my hope, give me my energy

You can turn the wrong into right

Precious lights

Illuminate me, won't you let me play

Won't you let me play

Give me the lights, precious lights

Give me lights

Give me my hope, give me my energy

You can turn the wrong into right

Precious lights

Illuminate me, carry me away

Carry me, carry me ...

I always like watching Tommy and JY together. They are such good friends.

Excellent footage. Crazy to think there is only one "TRUE" original member left in Styx. That would be James "JY" Young. ROCK ON!!!!!!!!

Brings back alot of memories (of 1980... and 1990 -- when I finally bought the Cornerstone cassette). Tommy's awesome. This is when he still looked like Naomi Watts - ha! :-)

Of course they're lip syncing to the original recording here. They weren't given a choice. ALL the bands did on these kinds of shows. One episode might have 4 or 5 different bands perform -- there's no way to get the sound wired up and mic'd and properly mixed for each one of them. Even now, bands get an hour's soundcheck to play on Letterman or Fallon. Big deal, there's lots of footage of this band KILLING IT live throughout the years. Lip synching back when this was filmed had nothing to do with a band's talent or ability to pull it off in live performances. It was the simple logistics of running a TV show.

Greetings! It was probably in their contract to lip-sync for this TV programme. Styx was a phenomenal live band in the 70's and 80's - the best!

I got your back Angie! I have seen Styx 4 times in the past 4 months - no lip syncing! Still have 3 more shows to go before the end of the year. They are the real deal. It's worth every penny I spend and every mile I drive!

I have seen them 6 times since the late 70's. Not once did they lip-sync a single song. If you listen to their albums/cassettes/CD's as much as I did/do you can tell when someone is lip-syncing and when they arent. Styx doesn't. Kinda hard to lip-sync when they have a new lead singer/keyboard player anyway.....

Heard they still lip-sync at their shows today. Can't believe people pay good money for that nonsense.

I don't know how old you are but many TV shows, especially in the 1960's-80's had the guest artists lip sync, like the long running series "Solid Gold" and many others. It's for the TV audience not the crowd there, and when a single is new they want the audience to get used to the recording and to buy it. Once it's famous then the artists will take license with it and stylize and vary it when performed live.
