Was that woman the strongest soul singer since Arethra Franklin and Etta James? That voice was like a deep growl out of the most violent slums of America.

Her voice changes because she grew up!!! She started of sing jazz and belting out when she did more soul-ful songs. But as she got older she learned to control her voice and had years of practice so when Back to black was created she has better technique. Plus with jazz you have more liberties when performing. You can do more runs in the song and ad-lib but in RnB soul songs like on Back to black she used less runs and more control of her voice.

It's interesting how her voice changed in live performances from Frank to Back to Black. Some people say she lost her power due to drugs/alc but I don't think that's true, she was just singing with a different style. More powerful during Frank era and more soulful and emotive during Back to Black era performances.
