Back in the 70s, when there was no MTV, real music fans went underground digging for gold, and found bands like String Driven Thing. Fronted by Glaswegians Chris & Pauline Adams, they were part of the famed Charisma stable, alongside Genesis, Lindisfarne & Van Der Graaf Generator and by the time they split in 74, theyd released three cult albums, the last of which, The Machine That Cried was hailed at the time as a staggering achievement by the Guardians rock critic, Martin Walker. The 90s saw occasional String Driven reunions, one of which was recorded for posterity [$uicide Live in Berlin]. while Chris rare German solo album [The Damage] also surfaced on the esoteric Ozit label. But behind the scenes, his sons were growing up, infected by the same old music bug, and gradually he was drawn back into performing. Now comes the Things first studio album in 30 years. Entitled Moments of Truth, it features ex Zydeco Ceilidh Band rhythm section Andy Allan and Dick Drake, guitars from sons Robin and Mervyn and banjo mandolin and bottleneck from George Tucker of the Berlin lineup. During the pre launch period, theyre doing a series of warm up gigs. The shows will feature material old and new, but anyone lucky enough to catch them will soon realise that acoustic folk this is definitely not..

Lyrics

It's all right pinning your faith in youth

Cos you there's one saving grace

It buds and it blossoms and it flies for a while

And then it starts to fade away

You're looking at beauty but all that you're seein' is skin

The machine, the machine that cried

The machine, the machine that cried

It's all right facing your life own truth

If everyone believes what you say

The beggar and the tycoon and the honest man

All you need for a day

We're dealing in fiction cos the truth's gonna drive us insane

The machine, the machine that cried

the machine, the machine that cried

There's a man at the bus stop standing by you

You've seen him and he's seen you

You've seen each other so many times before

It's the bitch on the TV that reads the news

The singers singing that can't sing the blues

The soldier who died but he's still too young to choose

It's the girl you met when you were sixteen

You fell in love but in between

Found that she did not really love you

SDT used to play in the downstairs of a pub called Carr's Keg at Charing Cross in Glasgow back in the late 60s. Wow... they were good... and Pauline was heartbreakingly beautiful. Happy days!

I remember finding The Machine that Cried in the record bins back in the day, but initially it was one of those record rating clubs from the back of a magazine...EARS, I believe. Turns out they send you old records trying to get reintroduced to the public again, and Keep Yer 'and On It was one they sent me. Great Lp, but the first 2 were sublime. Everything else after isn't the true SDT band anyway.
