Strawbs - Shine on silver sun 1975

Once I sat upon a hill

To watch the world go by

My friend the young magician

Had forbidden me to cry

But I was the comedian

With the laughs in short supply.

Shine on silver sun

Shine on everyone

Shine on silver sun

Shine on.

The sunlight filtered softly

Through the pale and watery sky

To catch the mirrored salmon

As it rose to take the fly

The flowers on the riverbank

Were left alone to die.

Shine on silver sun

Shine on everyone

Shine on silver sun

Shine on.

The church bells sounded midnight

As I rose to say goodbye

And a solitary tear

Fell from the corner of my eye.

Shine on silver sun

Shine on everyone

Shine on silver sun

Shine on everyone.

Shine on silver sun

Shine on everyone

Shine on silver sun

Shine on

Shine on

I am SO lucky to have discovered them at 11 or 12 years of age, and their music has made my life much more rich. Sadly, I have met only 3 or 4 fellow fans here in the US - and one owned a record shop! I honestly don't know why much of their music hasn't been covered by other bands! If I had my way I would put together a band than ONLY plays Strawbs songs!!

@1731dave You are royally awesome for turning lots of people onto The Strawbs!! In my life I have only met, well, less than 10 people who have ever even heard of them! What a shame! Keep spreading the magic!

@DoonToob Oh! I guess I could have done that also! But thank you very much! It's a beautiful song!!!

@ladyfuschia Not being instantly familiar with the song, I turned to google. It was from the album, 'The Strawbs - Don't Say Goodbye', and it's also availabel on the 'Strawbs 40th Anniversary Celebration Vol 1: Stawberry Fayre’

@DoonToob I'm trying to find "Evergreen". Do you know what album it's on?

DoonToob

@ladyfuschia Thank you, Ladyfuschia. I already own the album. I should have asked specifically for a youtube video of Cuts Like a Diamond, to which someone subsequently directed me.

@BillyJoeVegas You can get amazing turntables right now (I got one for Xmas) which hook up to your amp AND your PC via USB cable. AND have an iPod docking station which is lost on me as I don't got no iPod. Look up iProfile on the web...I just transferred some 70sz vintage Steeleye Span (another great band) vinyl to MP3; I am about to address Audience and some elderly jaz...B-)

Turned onto these guys in 1972, I think it was. Phenomenal!! Took the album back to college with me and turned hundreds on to their music. Still great to hear after all these years. Thanks much for the post.

Thanks for the post.... I have all the Strawbs vinyls... safely stowed away... I haven't had a turntabe for a long while. A sound engineer friend of mine is gonna set me up to transfer my vinyls (lots O' great music from the past never made it to CDs.)

Check the independent music stores - I walked into a store I frequented and the manager said, "You'll want this - and handed me 'Don't Say Goodbye' on CD. There are copies out there - keep looking.

If only I were in Britain! I'm in the US. Don't even remember how I got my hands on that tape in the first place! Oh well! Thanks for the info!

ladyfuschia...nice name & a beautiful song! Strawbs disbanded in 1978'Evergreen' is on an album titled 'Don't Say Goodbye'. It was released in 1987 after the group reformed,on the Toots label. Probably a fairly small independent company. The album wasn't issued in the states. I don't think they had a US distributor at the time. I'd like to hear the song. Perhaps you could locate a copy somewhere in Britain...although it would most likely be difficult to find.
