I just discovered this group who has a lot of great music! It's like finding a musical gold-mine :-) The lyrics are so good, so gripping, touching and the performance so emotional. Great song, sad but great story. I look forward to explore more of Strawbs music. I heard also "The Man Who Called Himself Jesus" its a good song too.

When I read the title I thought, "Ooh, I wonder if it's from the Wakeman days." Then I hear "blibbity-blippy-blilbliblibliblibliblibliblibbloodle blippity-bloopity-doodle-oodle-oodle . . . " and thought. "Yeah, I guess so." Amazing, but he didn't quite fit with this band. Glad he moved on to more appropriate genres to showcase his virtuosity.

This was referred to as "The Hangman and the Paint Roller: and Dave Cousins was apparently not too thrilled by Rick Wakeman's paint roller performance, as he felt it detracted from the serious nature of the song. It was only years later that he could look back and laugh, appreciating that as talented Wakeman was, he was still not much more than an immature kid when this took place. Wakeman's use of keyboards, along with Tony Hooper's acoustic guitar, set the tone as the narrative builds up to the climax. This song sure does take you on an emotional rollercoaster, even as you stifle a giggle at the famed paint roller scene.

See my previous comments. Was there anyone there at that amazing concert at Derby Cathedral in the mid - 1970s when this's song was performed' by I think The Lonesome Travellers (or was it Jack Hudson?) & what happened to my cousin John Stanley? I tough this song to my daughter Siobhan & she plays it on a 12 string, guitar in memory of you Doug Porter

Great song as most of their stuff is, been a follower since i found the Antiques and Curios album Live from Queen Elizabeth Hall - awful picture of Rick on the backcover. funny that Antique Suite hasn't been aired with all the WW1 celebrations

One of the most gut wrenching & heartbreaking songs the brilliant David Cousins has ever written! Imagine being forced to hang your own brother over different religious beliefs! My son, Justin loves this one, & it brings him to tears when he hears it, (thinking about his younger brother). They are very close. They are both music lovers, & very emotional, like their old daddy-o! Makes me proud!! God Bless 'em both!!
