In England; Middle -Ages villagers went "a-souling" around All Soul's Day [Hallowe'en] and through to Christmas tide. Singing or chanting from door to door praying for the dead, as they begged for a soul cake, an apple, a coin… this is the precursor to Trick or Treating… which shows just how old the custom is … I dare say it is also the precursor to Christmas Carolling (long fallen by the side - though we did it when we were kids) singing carols from door to door in hope of a  bit of money. Today kids just walk from store to store inside the Shopping Mall for free chocolate bars lol…. thanks for the History Lesson Mr. Sting.
