Sting - Come Again. Taken From album "Songs from the Labyrinth".

Sting isn't playing the lute, but theorbo, a much bigger lute that's able to render bassy sounds (it was invented in those days as contemporary people created the 5-string bass or 7-string guitar). Still, it's a rare instrument and pretty ramarkable.

I personally adore Downland, but I love these versions too, Sting was brave enough to add a bit of modernity, If you dont like it just stick to the many recordings made by specialized musicians. The lute playing is fresh and after all Downland is eternal, in this way his music was a bit revitalized and maybe doscovered by more people, new listeners that after this can go and look for more filological recordings and performances.

Very strange. I don't like it, but I sense that Sting is genuine in his love for this music and I don't feel too critical. I heard a disarming interview in which Sting said that he has no technique, but that he can sing in tune. To my ear he sings in a strange accent. His tone is dreadful. I think one's opinion of this performance depends on what one is used to even more than usual.

I love Dowland but Stink's pretensions have ruined it for me.

I already was aware of Barbara Bonney's rendition. VERY beautiful indeed — one of the best to find on YT. But one can't quite compare Sting's version to hers, because Sing's version has a completely different feel to it. Sting has tried to portray the usual atmosphere in which this song was performed back in the day; at least according to his own (rather extensive) research. Even though Sting's version may not be to your taste, at least it is in line with the findings of his research.
