This is the ORIGINAL original version, from 1947. The record went nowhere until he recut it in 1949 for Atlantic, which is the version most people know. Note, his orignal lyric was "drinkin' wine, mutherf#cker, drinkin' wine, goddam!" (they cleaned it up just a little...)

My father went to Virginia State College and always says, "Drink wine Spo-Dee-O-Dee Drink Wine" when he want's he daily glass of wine with dinner. McGhee sings, "Down in Petersburg, everything's fine.... If I'm not mistaken he's referring to Petersburg, Va., at least in this version.

At 1:35 does he sing, "Down on Gill Street..."? Just curious...It's a street in Knoxville Tennessee, Brownie and Sticks' hometown. Great song & great version!!

The first time I heard this was on my Dad's jukebox in 1947. After he and his brother returned from the war, they opened the Village Grill, the first Negro restaurant owned and operated by whites in segregated Atlanta. It had an old Wurlitzer 78 rpm jukebox that had some great rhythm and blues tunes on it. I was only there for about an hour one Sunday morning when he had to fix a compressor belt, but I remember this tune and memorizing "The Woodpecker Song" which I later found out was naughty

Less polished than the '49 recording, but that's what makes it special - it's like a demo. Thanks for sharing!
