Steve Morse is in a class all his own.  There is no other guitarist currently or even on the horizon which encompasses the shear diverse musical, technical and soulful abilities.

Confused you with Sunderlanding - with whom I exchanged a few comments. That said, Morse kicks ass!

Does that mean you think Morse doesn't compare or that comparing is not a worthwhile exercise? Regardless, I think Morse is an extraordinary talent. And by the way, you have no proof that 99% of Morse's audience are guitar players.

Indeed. I should correct myself, however. Every time I try to play a Steve Morse composition on guitar I become frustrated. Because EVERY damned one is difficult. The rewards for successful mastery, however, are somehow greater than the satisfaction I get from playing "Highway to Hell" for the upteenth time. he is truly an inspirational player.

Never heard of Leo Brouwer until you wrote of him. I spent a little time listening to him and he's obviously a great talent. But we're talking apples and oranges here. The only thing they have in common is that they play 6-string guitars. Clearly, Morse is superior in his world. Brouwer is very limited in that he plays classical guitar only (or does he?), while Morse composes for many instruments in addition to guitar. While I like classical guitar well enough, it is too limiting.

I disagree. Malmsteen is an impressive player but boring. Morse has consistently created songs of great beauty, some of which are hard to play and require great technical ability as well as phrasing finesse. His versatility is well-established compared to the one-dimensional Malmsteen. I do not minimize Malmsteen's place in guitar history, but it is clear his talents do not extend to composition like Morse. You are obviously biased in some sense. Listen to "Night Meets Light"...

Just as many, if not more, people listen to Malmsteen, and guess what? 99% of his and Mr. Morse's audience are guitar players. What does that tell you about their songwritting abilities? They aren't good. Guitar players get off on it because of the technique, but musically there isn't much. If you want a good composer and player listen to Leo Brouwer.

I disagree on both points. I think SM is a brilliant composer and ask that you name another guitarist with his kind of chops who is/was better. In addition, your declaration that his chops are the only reason people listen to his music is absurd. Try listening to Yngwie for longer than a few songs. Without Steve's beautiful songwriting abilities, his technical abilities are relatively worthless.

Sunderlanding

That wasn't my point, but in answe to your question if you're brilliant at both you're brilliant at both. However his are not as brilliant as his chops. Mozart's composing was as brilliant as his chops. Steve Morse is an ok composer with brilliant chops. No one would listen to his songs if they didn't display his awesome technique.
