For my money, this is Steve Miller's crowning accomplishment. He has a lot of great songs and I have to be in the right frame of mind to play this one; but when I do, I can feel what it is to live motherless. A lot of people who I respect have recorded this song, but none of them make me believe it. It's like they are singing from outside of the experience from a place of mere belief or philosophy. Steve sings it like he absolutely knows or has experienced it. Blind Willie Johnson penned the words in 1927. That might explain the original melody that most covers emulate, but I think Steve captured the essence of the song musically. I still weep when I hear it.No disrespect intended to BWJ - "Motherless Children" is a blues standard first recorded by Blind Willie Johnson in 1927,[1] and later popularised (inter alia) by Bob Dylan, Dave Van Ronk, Eric Clapton and Lucinda Williams.[2]The song[3] has an autobiographical theme, as Johnson's mother died when he was young. His father remarried soon after her death, and later the stepmother allegedly blinded the boy with lye after the father found her in flagrante delicto.

I like how he was in a garage just making the words up as they played.

Another reason why SMB was a staple on progressive rock radio!

Remember first hearing this while on the USS ORISKANY while in the Gulf of Tonkin in 1972. STILL one of the most beautifully, haunting rock songs of all time and, in my opinion, Steve Miller Band's BEST!

I have lost both my Mother & father as of July of last year.. MY sister is my family now.. I am in great awe of all she does and accomplishes.. but there are days when one feels that loneliness and just wishes for an earlier time when things went easy and life was right or wrong and you knew that there was always someone who loved you unconditionally... *)O(* TO all of us who have grown older and lost our parents THANKS STEVE for the emotion and great cover of this tune.. *)O(*

Yeah, I know. Stevie had a great musical background, and honestly can play almost anything. He was a pioneer for other musicians in paving the way for composers and artists to take control of their own music in nearly every aspect. Now that has come around full circle again. Anybody can publish their music, anybody with some Mac equipment and decent recording devices can record at low cost. But big producers and agencies control the big bucks once again--in the U.S.A..

I think he just wanted to branch out into different styles of music and not just glued into one type, and he became better known through his blues rock style and he probably would of been forgotten if he just stuck to this type.

Physically it was a hard life when the Mother was gone. Eventually there was the Saving Grace...metaphorically speaking: The Here and Now can be appreciated...by All, yes.

@Philtration Rightly said Sir. I maintain the theory (anecdotal at best) that as the Beatles fade into memory, then so does the integrity of modern popular music, and with that, goes the imagination of impetuous youth. Remember, for example, Steve Miller and Mcartney on 'my dark hour' for example. What a magical moment in 68. We need another punk-type revolution.

This could be outta spiritualized's repertoire. I love this Steve Miller version, I know he's a great guitarist but I really rate Mr Miller as a singer.
