I believe as Steve Earle does that the fate of the world depends on the worst places in the world, Jerusalem. Someday they will lay down their swords and learn to live as one with Palestine.

I agree about the song - my comments were about the discussion below and, more generally, the tendency to see the conflict in the middle east as primarily a conflict between religions. Though I do think Steve has a keen interest in history, and I know he read up on the history before writing this album, the song certainly draws more on the prophetic hope that is shared between the three Abrahamic traditions.

Colonialism and economic issues are both caused and solved by the collective dreams and social evolution driving them. The quest for a home and a quest for peace are behind every issue there. It's those forces that Earle is addressing-- as a prophetic voice, not a historian.

Luke 21:20 could very well happen in times like these. All who do the deeds of Abraham are his children.

@TheMalcom72 Also, I would argue that most of the discussion below is about politics, not religion. The conflict in the middle east gets marked as religious, but like anywhere else the real issue is a history of colonialism and economic issues.

@TheMalcom72 If you don't care about words, why would you be a fan of an artist like Steve? I am sure Steve wants us to listen to the world and prompt discussion. Nothing wrong with respectful discussion of religion... but there is a lot wrong with a society that won't allow it.

@fishmole2 hi gilad. if i'm not mistaking, in 48 there was a war between jews and palestinians in israel. i dont care who started it. but what is certain is that the jews eventually "won" and they live and control israel to this day in reletively democratic manner. the events of 1948 did NOT have a racist character(at least it wasn't intended). it was simply a war, a civil war in which on side was jews, and the other was muslim arabs. I'm willing to doubt what i learned at school if you are.

@bleumoon2u you are right, my friend, Steve has been my hero for years and years. A great man and a continuing inspiration to so many of us out here who struggle with our own demons.

Top Song. Great Man. God Bless Him. The poison of one is the lifeblood of the other. and a race of armed men arose from the earth and exterminated each other and then it was quiet again

@fishmole Welll maybe they just thought that enough is enough... most of their relatives got killed in the holocast and they came to their own country and then all countries around them attacked them... and maybe then they thought that enough is enough... we wont let other people decide our faith.... And it was a war.... and the jews won..... what do you think would have happened to them if they lost?
