Steve Earle cover of Johnny Cash's "Don't Take Your Guns To Town"

A great performance of Earle in my opinion, and about time it gets uploaded on YT.

Hope you enjoy it!

Aleksander You might be able to google and find this, but it is NOT an officially released collection. It is a widely circulated bootleg from about 20 years ago in which a fan collected songs Steve did for various side projects. People then took the bootleg and illegally are making money off selling it. Better to actually buy the original recording, especially now when you can get an individual song.

Man in Black would approve. I know it. The Jerry Douglas steel with Steve Earle. Amazing and still immediately poignant.

Well, google Magnetised Motherfuckers then, and you clearly see that its a 3-CD collection of b-sides and live-tracks. And this song is on it...I never claimed it wasnt on other CD's aswell, so chill out homeboy!

The song originally appeared on the CD "Restless On The Farm" from Jerry Douglas (who plays the slide guitar), released 1998 on Sugar Hill Records.

Very nice cover... and thanks for putting it up on YT. Love Steve Earle's own original music and I also love it when he covers songs because he always does it with his whole heart. You can tell he's thinking about the words he's singing and they truly mean something to him.

Steve has enough exes to cover the female fan base. It's rare one can take a Johnny Cash song and make it his own, but I think Jerry and Steve did on this one. Johnny would be proud.

@aybz9 I got this tune on a Jerry Douglas album. Restless On the Farm I believe its called. Hope that helps

@TheMroldcowboy This is not bluegrass, and was done with Jerry Douglas, not Del McCoury. The Mountain is a great album, but this is not on it. For one thing, The Mountain is all Steve originals.

@aybz9 Hi Again - I found out that Earles version of "Don't Take Your Guns to Town" was released on a Jerry Douglas album. Look up his "Restless on the Farm." He is a dobro player, and the album had several guests. You can get the MP3 on Amazon.

@aybz9 There are a few of us, even if Steve complains about his audiences getting older and hairier. After all, no one writes a better obsessed love song than he does.

@aybz9You are welcome...and it is sister. :)

@aybz9 I responded too quickly. I was partially wrong as some of the songs were officially released, as singles or part of a side project, That means it is not really legal to trade/download those songs. Which is not to say you can't find it. Selling is definitely illegal.

@aybz9 This is a bootleg, though a widely circulated one. Or more precisely, it is a collection of live recordings someone put together from various bootlegs of live sows. It is illegal to sell it. However, you can share it, and it is not all that hard to find a download.
