(America)

America where are you now?

Don't you care about your sons and daughters?

Don't you know we need you now

We can't fight alone against the monster

(Monster)

Once the religious, the hunted and weary

Chasing the promise of freedom and hope

Came to this country to build a new vision

Far from the reaches of kingdom and pope

Like good Christians, some would burn the witches

Later some got slaves to gather riches

But still from near and far to seek America

They came by thousands to court the wild

And she just patiently smiled and bore a child

To be their spirit and guiding light

And once the ties with the crown had been broken

Westward in saddle and wagon it went

And 'til the railroad linked ocean to ocean

Many the lives which had come to an end

While we bullied, stole and bought our a homeland

We began the slaughter of the red man

But still from near and far to seek America

They came by thousands to court the wild

And she just patiently smiled and bore a child

To be their spirit and guiding light

The blue and grey they stomped it

They kicked it just like a dog

And when the war over

They stuffed it just like a hog

And though the past has it's share of injustice

Kind was the spirit in many a way

But it's protectors and friends have been sleeping

Now it's a monster and will not obey

(Suicide)

The spirit was freedom and justice

And it's keepers seem generous and kind

It's leaders were supposed to serve the country

But now they won't pay it no mind

'Cause the people grew fat and got lazy

And now their vote is a meaningless joke

They babble about law and order

But it's all just an echo of what they've been told

Yeah, there's a monster on the loose

It's got our heads into a noose

And it just sits there watchin'

Our cities have turned into jungles

And corruption is stranglin' the land

The police force is watching the people

And the people just can't understand

We don't know how to mind our own business

'Cause the whole worlds got to be just like us

Now we are fighting a war over there

No matter who's the winner

We can't pay the cost

'Cause there's a monster on the loose

It's got our heads into a noose

And it just sits there watching

Great song but it doesn't play well on this for some reason. Maybe my internet connection?

Your upload has glitches in it... might want to re-upload it... plus, this is a shortened version of the original 9 minute version... and your lyrics here are wrong compared to the lyrics of this version you have uploaded... (Verse I) "Like good Christians, some would burn the witches, Later some got slaves to gather riches" doesn't match this version's lyrics... this is the lyrics of the 9 minute version... good try, and thanks for uploading their greatest hits, nice to hear

Oi, I know it's been a Loooooooong time since I've heard this song, but I believe it's not playing quite right. Maybe it's the lack of certain substances.

Ironic, these guys were Canadian, yet hit the social commentary nail on the head.  The group had its start in Oshawa, Ontario, where Owen McCrohan owned a dance hall called the Jubilee Pavilion ("The Jube" to the locals).  His sons - Jerry, Dennis/aka Mars Bonfire - recorded as the backup group to British Invasion-esque singer Jack London as Jack London & the Sparrows, releasing one rare but excellent album for Canadian Capitol circa 1964.  When Jack left, they carried on as The Sparrow with a new singer (....guess who?).  And the rest is history!

This is the band sanctioned single edit. Whatever else your grievances are, don't beat up on this guy for using a shorter version the band released in the hope of getting airplay. I've got the single, & like the Who's single edit of Won't Get Fooled Again, it's perhaps more powerful for its shorter length.

More relevant today than it was in the Viet Nam era, to which some of it was referring..

Me too, tears that the spirit of freedom is being downtrodden and even more so today than 1969, The US Constitution is being trampled and ignored, and tyranny is gaining ground.........if the US accepts and succumbs to the religious, social, financial tyranny of the current US leadership, who is going to be a model of freedom for the rest of the world, to stand against the corrupt tyranny of the United Nations?
