Please don't get me wrong. I have always loved Eric's playing and that of other British guitar greats like Page, Trower, Beck, et al; but enough with the "Clapton is god" and "he's better than Stephen." BOTH are tremendous guitarists. Stills is the superior song crafter and arranger. He's the better acoustic player. His vocalizing is better. He also plays a mean piano and Hammond organ. His musical influences go far beyond the blues and reggae. He speaks and sings in fluent Spanish. He even played Hendrix-style (see Manassas) right after his friend Jimi innovated it, while Clapton was busy filling his undershorts wondering what to do now that the bar was raised. It's a travesty that Stills is rarely mentioned among the greats. To many of us, he defines the term.

This transports me back to 1971 and 15-year-old me sneaking downstairs before Dad woke up to play my newly bought Stephen Stills album on the family record player. I wore out this part of my LP, replaying the superb Clapton guitar solo. Still have the original album in my collection, together with Stephen Stills 2.

All of rock's greatest guitarists agree that Stephen Still's is their preferred "jam" partner, improvisor and creative stylist. Jimi said so. In fact, Hendrix said Stills was the best guitarist he'd ever heard. I'd say Clapton is tops but who am I to say so?

Stephen Barncard, who did engineering on this, told the story that he'd done a rough edit on the basic track which left a bit at the end where the beat went out of synch. He planned to fix it but hadn't had the chance when Clapton unexpectedly came in and started hooking up his guitar. Barncard figured he'd warn him during the playback but Clapton just started playing--and then just played through the time change, adjusted to it on the spot so Barncard could never 'fix' it. You can hear the change at 5:20. It only makes the track more remarkable, IMHO.

There are only three guitar players in the world that after two notes you recognize in a moment. Do you know who they are ? Jimi , Eric and Carlos.......ERIC IS JUST GREAT
