As Malkmus/Jicks/Pavement and even Grateful Dead fan, I will say that this song is most certainly a nod/spoof to the Dead and hippies in general. The St. Stephen riff is very clear and knowing Malkmus, he ain't trying to hide it.10 years ago

I am not buying all this Dead similarity (not that it is an insult). Sure, the first time I listened I heard the St. Stephen similarity. But upon knowing the song better, I never think of that. Yes, he often has a jangly guitar sound. But the vocals, the lyrics and really the punk attitude should prevent him from being classified in the same circle as the Dead.Related Videos
