Steely Dan one of the greatest bands ever...that amazing drummer is non other than the late great Ricky Lawson, one of the best drummers EVER and that sax player is also a late great one: Cornelius Bumpus may they continue to rest in peace and thanks for all your musical contributions and when it comes to Fagen and Becker the only word that comes to mind is GENIUSES

I like the version where Walter sings lead. It's hard to find, performed live 16 years before it ever got on album and there are slightly different lyrics but I love it even more than this one.

I would parenthetically kick the living crap out of anyone who deigns to decry this incredible band in any way, shape or form, but you wastes of oxygen are unworthy of even that psychic effort. You know who you are and you should be ashamed of yourselves.

So groovy, Ricky Lawson gives the tempo, the tone, the rythm. Teach me, I wanna learn!!!Hmm!!

There is statistically or stylistically literally next to nothing in common with Caves of Altamira. Somebody's being fooled because of the "horn section" common denominator. Which had I been them I would've done EVEN more of. They followed through were bands like B,S&T and Chicago stumbled.

Ryan - I would never confuse simplicity with being easy. What I'm saying is the entire song is a rewrite of Caves Of Altamira. Lawson is simply laying down a simple funk groove because the "new" Dan can't play the old stuff like the original. Give Bruford or any of the other drummers I mentioned a shot and they would do all kind of wonderful things with this. Lawson's role here i metronome. No more no less. Which is what a drummer's job is but it could be done with much more style and vision...

I would be very careful about associating unique personal identity with skill set and talent. Just because you think this drum beat doesn't set itself apart from other drummers, doesn't mean it's easy to play. I also have a slogan I tell people: Never confuse simplicity with easy. Two separate concepts. As simple as this drum beat may be, I would die to play with this drummer here! I doubt many others could come close.

My 14 year old son is in his high school jazz band and they wanted to go see Dan Band in concert. Like father, like son....:)
