In 1605 guy faulks and a number of other catholics plotted to blow up the houses of parliament (I can't remember if it was the commons or the Lord's) they decided that the night of the 5th in November would be a perfect time for them to blow up parliament . They chose this date because the king would be opening parliament on that day , the king being a protestant who hated catholics . On the 5th the plotter guy faulks was captured in the act of lighting the hundreds of barrels of gun powder ,he was tortured to find out the other plotters and to sign a confession and that he was catholic and did this because of his faith (this to discredit the catholics and inspire public hatred) he was eventually hung , drawn and quartered then burnt. Its an English tradition that every night on the 5th of November we have fireworks and burn an effigy of guy faulks on a bonfire ,small kids used to make them to sell hence the saying "penny for the guy." that's what john (being a Britt) was referring to ,the explosion of the parliament building. Most people recognize the poem about it that most school children are taught in primary school : Remember, remember the fifth of NovemberGunpowder, treason and plot.I see no reason, why gunpowder treasonShould ever be forgot.Guy Fawkes, guy, t'was his intent To blow up king and parliament.
