There's a place near by the loan-au

Where the wine is always strong,

And the old man lies sleeping

In the warm sun.

But i am only passing through,

And have no time to spend with you.

You can feel the firing rhythm

It's been falling through the air.

Like dread, sun never changes

It's always there.

You know i'm only passing through,

Have no time to spend with you.

There's a girl that once i loved

From memories i re-call.

Days i've spent beside her -

Nights as well.

You know, i'm only passing through,

Have no time to spend with you.

I WAS NEARLY 17 WHEN I FIRST HEARD THIS (WAS ON A COMPILATION ALBUM CALLED FILL YOUR HEAD WITH ROCK )WAS ONE OF MY FAVOURITE TRACKS. SO SAD THAT MICK BRADLEY DIED AT SUCH A YOUNG AGE. RIP MICK

This is timeless, it's just as awe inspiring to listen to now as when it was first released. Absolutely mesmerising!

Martin Pugh's guitar is the perfect foil for Kieran White's voice. Brilliant track!

This sounds as fresh now as it did when I first heard it 40 years ago. Brilliant! The whole of the Mountains album is also awesome!

The 2 Steamhammer LP's I have always sounded very different to me, the other one was much harder and my favorite, However this is my favorite song.

How about 'near Barcelona' ? A song about travel and as such works for me on the road. The sampler Fill Your Head With Rock led me to think Steam was US untill recently, when I bought a Best Of cd (Junior i.w.) just for this track. Alas, it seems a one-of-a-kind song by Kieran White, with the other stuff doing little for me. The typical fade-out and fade-in of the jangling guitar(s) and staccato drumming I have not heard elsewhere ever since. A largely unknown classic, as is the band.

I found this today after 40 years. Amazing how wrong they get the lyrics - it's 'a place near b Bologna'. I always thought it was by Pacific Gas & Electric off one of the samplers I had at the time. Now I know ... and bought the MP3. That's the miracle of the internets, innit.

I remember taping this song on my reel to reel tape recorder in 1971.It must have been recorded off one of John Peel's shows. Listeng to this evocative and dreamlike track, it is hard to believe the band originated from Worthing.
