Robert Mason's Stardrive rip through a set of cosmic instrumentals. Mason used 2 Arp 2500s combined to produce early polyphonic sounds. It's a little known classic that is unlike anything else.

It's a shame there's not much info online about this, but I found that Gadd was on Intergalatic Trot. Is he on this one as well?

Mason did not use a pair of ARP 2500's. He built a custom polyphonic synthesizer using ARP 2500 modules and his own designs. The 2500 couldn't play chords. I don't know how many hours I spent looking at that picture trying to to figure out what he concocted from the sparse description in the liner notes. By the way, two 2500's would have set you back between $20 to $40K depending on options. That's $110 to $220K in today's money. Compare that to the ARP 2600's original list price of about $3000.

That's right. I think the news anchor then was Jerry Turner. I knew the music at the time and told people, but friends and family thought I had weird tastes in music. Today they say I was ahead of the time. Bought the album at Recordmasters at Yorkridge Shopping Center in Cockeysville when they had a window painting up for Boston's first album, or maybe it was the Starcastle one ;).

@BigAssTuba In 1977, this was also used as the Eyewitness News theme for another Group W station: Baltimore's WJZ-TV 13. However, I never knew where it came from until I found this video. My thanks to marscape1 for posting this!

Wow! Sure is great to hear this on YouTube! Haven't been able to listen to these in years! However, just so you know, there is a skip at around 0:55 where a small part of "Pulsar" gets lost. I wonder if you could fix and re-post? Otherwise, thanks a bunch for this and the other Stardrive tracks!

Bob Mason was my boss in the '90's, he owned and operated a recording studio between Union Square and Washington Square Park in NYC. He was full of great stories about the early days of electronic music, and he even claimed to have flown into the Woodstock festival via helicopter with replacement P.A. parts. He was attacked by a deranged fan during a (Carnegie Hall?) performance in the 70's, which hastened his retreat from performing. Prior to Stardrive, he was a child prodigy composer/ pianist.

I had this album and played the hell out of it at high volume. Energizing! For those in the Boston area, it was the theme music for WBZ-TVs Eyewitness News with Doug Henning. Thrilled to find this here!

I adored this band. They were tight as hell and the music ALWAYS took the listener on a journey. Listen to the track here and imagine performing it. No wonder Mason screams with excitement during this track. I challenge any musician to listen at rehearsal volume and not get totally pumped. I don't know whatever became of Mr. Mason, but this is one artist who should absolutely get his ass back on the stage with a hot band and bring the damn house down proper. He can do it.
