Chorus:

Ah, for just one time I would take the Northwest Passage

To find the hand of Franklin reaching for the Beaufort Sea;

Tracing one warm line through a land so wild and savage

And make a Northwest Passage to the sea.

Westward from the Davis Strait 'tis there 'twas said to lie

The sea route to the Orient for which so many died;

Seeking gold and glory, leaving weathered, broken bones

And a long-forgotten lonely cairn of stones.

(chorus)

Three centuries thereafter, I take passage overland

In the footsteps of brave Kelso, where his "sea of flowers" began

Watching cities rise before me, then behind me sink again

This tardiest explorer, driving hard across the plain.

(chorus)

And through the night, behind the wheel, the mileage clicking west

I think upon Mackenzie, David Thompson and the rest

Who cracked the mountain ramparts and did show a path for me

To race the roaring Fraser to the sea.

(chorus)

How then am I so different from the first men through this way?

Like them, I left a settled life, I threw it all away.

To seek a Northwest Passage at the call of many men

To find there but the road back home again.

(chorus)

This song is, at the very least, an anthem for anyone who has tried to achieve that which was once unachievable. Respect.

Thank you for this. God rest the brave British sailors and Royal Marines who lost their lives on the Franklin expedition. Maybe one day they'll be honoured in Britain as much as they deserve to come home. God bless and rest Stan Rogers, a Canadian gemstone. Hands across the sea.

Its weird im 14 and usualy a metalhead but shanties are just awesome i dont know what it is i didnt grow up with it but when i was 12 i heard old maui by the dreadnoughts and ive just found polka (especialy shanties) awesome ever since. The closest thing i could get to a reason is that like most families on the coasts of scotland my family has a history of of jobs at sea all the way up to my oldrest brother who works on a trawler.

The late and truly great Canadian folk singer Stan Rogers - this song is about the lost Franklin expedition to find the Northwest Passage - this is a part of Canadian history and just last year Parks Canada found the HMS Erebus one of the two ships lost and are now slowly working on it as an archaeological site.

Curtis Stokman -- An expedition to Baffin Island in the late 1970's learned why Franklin's Men became Stark Raving Mad --AS the Franklin Expedition was stocking their vessel for the long voyage to find the NW Passage , they used the LOWEST BIDDER to supply the ship with canned goods --EVERY single can of food was sealed with LEAD SOLDER --Franklin's Crew were suffering from Lead Poisoning --This explains why , as the remaining crew were trying to Head SOUTH toward civilization , they hauled Sea Chests , Tables , Chairs & all the unnecessary supplies they never needed --NOT a Trace of the Crew who tried to walk away from their camp was ever found

Stan Rogers was front and centre in my thoughts last night at the ROM, during the Royal Canadian Geographic Society's celebration of the discovery of Franklin's ship, the HMS Erebus, in Victoria Strait last fall. Despite the speech from PM Harper, it was the music of Stan Rogers that made the evening particularly memorable, and this marine archeology discovery a very proud evening to be Canadian. Only wish Stan was still with us to sign the song himself.
