Anyone know if there are extant recordings of Charlie Barnet's orchestra of the late 40s/early 50s featuring a Maynard Ferguson, Doc Severinsen and Ray Wetzel trumpet section?

Both hot and moody, this is one of Kenton's greats - could any other trumpeter interpret quite as well as Maynard?

Maynard had more "chops" than any other trumpeter!!

I've been a Kenton fan for 62 years. This stuff will never get old, just better. Maynard Ferguson could hit notes only a dog could hear. What an amazing musician!!Steve Basile

Maynard not only had fantastic frequency and dynamic ranges, but he had an endless musical imagination. He would use those qualities to create real drama within the music. He set a new standard of achievement for young players to strive for. Many of the really phenomenal players today grew up on a steady diet of Maynard. There are always those critics who endlessly criticize his technical skills. I can't imagine why. I can't imagine any player in a Kenton band lacking technique.

Maynard is (was) the real thing. no gimmicks, no switching to other instruments to get that kind of range, although he was a great trombone and flugel player too. I can attest also that he was a very loud player. I recall being in the audience at the back of a hall in the 70s and when Maynard would play over the band, man he would fill up that hall with so much sound it was simply incredible. God bless Maynard.

I've not been alone in wondering for years whether MF switches to Flügel Horn and back for that range of register. Does anyone Know?

The way the song leads you to think the final chord is coming up at 2:46 and then goes on is one of the biggest throw-offs of my life. Beautiful song, love the sound Maynard can bring to high register trumpet.

Don't forget that this great arrangement was done by Shorty Rogers aka Milton M. Rajonsky.
