Dedicated to LTA born 4-13-31 died 3-2-2015. She and her sister that preceded her were Stan Kenton's biggest fans. They instilled in me a love of good music,

Appreciate you taking the time to join the forum here, Mike. This particular band took jazz to new heights. You yourself have produced some exciting and thrilling sounds. Give my regards to the trumpeter next only to Arturo, Carl.

Would be nice if they would credit Gerald Wilson for his original composition titled "Yard Dog Mazurka" for the Jimmy Lunceford Orchestra about 10 years or so before this piece was recorded by the Kenton Orchestra as "Intermission Riff." Just sayin'

Just read many of the comments. What a fun time it was playing on this band!!! Stan was back from his first major illness and loving being back on the road. The audiences all over Europe and England were fantastic. To answer a couple of questions. Yes - that's me. And yes - the sound guy seemed to be asleep at the wheel a few times during the concert, but over all the sound is pretty good and the video is great. What a treat seeing all those old friends. Sadly, many of them are gone now: Stan Willie Maiiden, Quinn Davis, Chuck Carter, Ramon Lopez, Dick Shearer, and Fred Carter.

by '72 those tremendous bands of Kenton's were a thing of the past but this is quite admirable

Every time I hear this version from his London appearance I get that fiery thrill right down to my feet - which have a mind of their own.

Was Erskine not with Kenton in '72?

It's nice to see so many positive comments on Kenton's trombone section sound. What made it so unique? My grandson just started trombone lessons. This is the Kenton t-bone sound I want him to hear.if you want to hear some recent great large orchestra jazz, look for Don Ellisreunion concert done at LAX Marriott. There's one done by European band, not quite as good.

Couldn't agree more nemo227. Loved them all from Jack Teagarden through Tommy Dorsey, Urbie Green, God AKA Frank Rosolino, to Mark Nightingale and Jiggs Whigham. Also the unsung like the Bobs Burgess and Fitzpatrick, and Bill Russo. You'll have heard this before but "I've found Nemo". Glad I did!t.

I thought the trumpet player was about to blow the chrome off his trumpet.Kenton's arrangers knew how to use the full dynamic capabilities of the orchestra and we can be glad about that.Fun? Hell, yes.

I was and still am a huge Kenton fan. I played trumpet. My greatest-ever trumpet ambition would have been to play lead with Stan. I loved all the big bands but would always put Stan first. How greatly missed such great music is.

Pretty much my favourite version of this old chestnut. Thought it was goin to be messy at first but then the bones started. Nuff said, I can forgive Stan anything when the trombones get going.Swings like hell too for a live recording.
