A recording of the legendary Stan Kenton Jazz Orchestra during the 1960 -- 1963 period when Stan Kenton had Conn 16E Mellophoniums in his orchestra. Mellophoniums are traditional "French horn style" mellophones with their bells straighten out to allow the sound of the horn to project directly towards the audience. Contrary to popular belief Stan Kenton was neither the inventor nor a collaborator in the invention of the mellophonium, which was an instrument already in existence for many years. Some members of the orchestra, because of the horn's poor intonation and blaring tone, poorly received the mellophonium. However these issues were mainly the result of mellophonium players using cornet mouthpieces which are far too small and shallow for a mellophone instrument, a practice Stan Kenton quickly put a stop to. When the players switch to standard mellophone mouthpieces with diameters reaching 19mm and larger many of the issues with the horn became manageable and produced a unique tone that fitted perfectly between the saxophones, trumpets and trombones. The mellophonium is closely related to the marching mellophones used in corps, marching bands and jazz groups today. While marching mellophones are superior to the mellophoniums in many ways they still carry some of the hallmark issues that the mellophonium had such as tricky intonation and difficult tone control.

Note: Being a mellophone/mellophonium/marching mellophone player I encourage as many teachers, instructors and marching mellophone players to listen to the Stan Kenton mellophonium sound and try using alto horn mouthpieces (which are just traditional mellophone mouthpieces with trumpet shanks) in an attempt to help keep the Kenton sound alive.

Jazz doesn't have to swing and rock to present a piece of music.' Tone colour means just that, a variation of all moods and feelings from the sad to the high-flying exuberance. You don't judge an orchard by looking at one apple.

The song is on the album the "sophisticated approach"... A album of great charts that Kenton thought was not recorded very well (mostly because of intonation issues with Mellophoniums) So he had the album parked and tried to get it off the market.... eventually it found it's way back to a CD

All The Things You Are is, for me, one of the most beautifully crafted songs ever written and the sound of the Kenton Band does wonderfully do justice in this arrangement of its beauty. There is another recording that was done with the song a little faster than this one and I feel it was a little too fast, and this one is a little too slow, so the best tempo for it is what this old drummer hears in his own head. Nonetheless the voicings and chords here are gorgeous in this arrangement.

Fantastic piece. Although I have to say I liked the trombone arrangement a bit more than this because they have a warmer, but crisp sound, and I'm a bit biased.

Swing has countless meanings, so please specify what you mean when you say he doesn't swing.

hey people, if you don't like his music don't listen to it. end of discussion!! the guy was a visionary who also happened to be a heavy drinker and went thru 4-5 wives!! his music speaks for itself very progressive and pushed the envelope, not for everyone. you have to have to an open mind to appreciate his music!! @BUJaZzDJ Could Stan have swung if he wanted to though?? He certainly had plenty of famous musicians in his band like Maynard Ferguson, Shorty Rogers and Conti Condoli who knew how to swing. I tihnk Stan was perhaps more of an orchestra that a pure jazz band like Ellington, Bassie or Herman.

@BUJaZzDJ If you don't like the way Kenton swings or doesn't, please don't just come onto one of his videos and, basically, berate anyone who likes this music by saying most "real jazzers" don't like it. There's a lot more to jazz than swing, and Kenton explored all options. You don't hear too many people criticizing Dixieland or Pat Metheny's Brazilian-tinged jazz for not swinging, do you? (By the way, I've played stuff in all of the styles I mentioned. It's all jazz, and it's all good.

thanks for the mouthpiece tips. I never knew the difference between alto horn mouth pieces and mellophone mouthpieces.

BUJaZzDJ.....I don't have a problem with your opinion....I just have a problem with how you come on to someone else. I'm not going to engage you in a pissing contest, and I thought that this just took place over the political videos, I don't know anything about you....I don't know you have been conferring with, however, I think you need to grow up, know who you are talking to and what you are talking about before you make such states. I'm not going to engage you anymore...have a nice day.
