Amazing, horrible, tragic song. I don't believe the person singing is necessarily evil, just messed-up enough to kill the person he loves the most; and when he sees her there, he wants to join her. Only, he knows he can't get into Heaven, so he asks her to leave her "shoe in the gateway", so he can slip in behind. I listened to it over and over. Justin Vernon's solo work is incredible.
