it's funny how easy it is for people to misinterpret Spiritualized. Jason Pierce is not a religious person. Oh well, that's art for you.

Met two of the guys from Spiritualized the other day at a fundraising gig in Nottingham. They formed a band also featuring Baz from The Fratellis and Kev from Beautiful South. What a fantastic show that was! The gig raised £1.5k for the charity Mencap. They performed free of charge. Top blokes!

Yeh, amazing song (shame about the album as a while), I ain't religious but when I was riding a habit for 10 years his references were so easy to picture, I saw them perform this song on the acoustic mainline tour in april 07 at St Mary's Church in Nottingham........the 1st verse, in particular 'I don't believe your promises, I don't believe your lies' sung in front of the alter with a huge cross hanging from the ceiling above his head ...........the memory of that will be with me forever.

Amazing Grace is my least favourite album of theirs, but this tune is nothing but WIN. A stroll-to-work-listening-to-the-iPod classic.

not sure why you commented on this but just to fill you in-jason pierce is NOT religeous and this is NOT a christian song! the lyrics kinda make that obvious if you actually listen. he's explained before about using religeous text and words simply because the imagery works. not because he's a fucking god squad member!

and nothing... People just seem to be seeing this song as something positive towards God but it seems to be the complete opposite. I interpreted 'lord let it rain on me' as a the singer not caring about God's wrath and judgement because: "I don't believe your promises/I don't believe your lies" i.e. he doesn't believe in him.

I got the impression this wasn't particularly positive towards God. Look at the lines: "Jesus Christ, Look at what you've gone and done 2,000 years of lookin' down The barrel of a gun You got the fools believin' That there's something else to gain Jesus Christ, When you comin' down again?" Also: "I don't believe your promises I don't believe your lies"

I hate to have to agree with you, but the release from 2008 didn't do much to make me think Jason was coming round from more recent stuff. Looks like the live performances are still amazing from what I've seen on YouTube (which is NOTHING like being there...)
