How in the HELL did I never discover this song until now. I've lived in and around since 1988 and followed the Seattle music scene eagerly during the 90's. I bought this CD when it first came out, but some how, some way, I never paid attention to this track and it's absolutely brilliant.Thanks Soundgarden. This is my Christmas present right here.

I like how the first "vocals" you hear at 1:25 sound like a ghost weeping. This song could've come right off of Ultramega OK; it reminds me so much of 665/667.

My interpretation is that it's really just about the hopelessness in keeping "the pure and the brave" pure, as they will all inevitably fall to temptation (a bite of the apple). It's interesting to place it specifically in the garden of Eden, though. What's interesting in that context is to ponder what point of view Chris is singing from. Is it the snake, or is it a more omnipotent narrator? Who knows. Great fucking track, though. One of the few I could call both very soothing and very creepy.
