Below this comment...i notice there seems to be some confusion as to whether or not Sons of Maria can essentially sample and then loop what was originally a Traci Chapman jam.The skinny on that is SoM can indeed use the copywrited material of TC if, and only if they've asked for (that is paid for) permission to utilize TC's original material. There are several companies that handle copywrited material but one of the main ones is known as ASCAP (Amer. Society of Composers , Artists & Publishers)...BMI is another well known copywritten material handler. so what happens is ASCAP handles the requests of people wanting to use the work of other by request and for a fee...those fees go to ASCAP for their service and they in turn pay out , in the form of royalties monies to the originator of the matetial. in this. case SoM likely paid ASCAP x amount of money for the right to Sample TC's original song Fast Car. Then TC received a portion of that fee as a royalty for allowing someone whom has requested permission to use her music.if SoM didnt get permission and didnt pay for theright to use copywrited material...then ASCAP would go after them and slap them with a lawsuit with penalties way higher than the permission fee. But that can and does happen...just ask Rick James how he felt when MC Hammer took hismaterial without proper permission, same with Vanilla Ice using David Bowies riff in Ice ice baby way back in 1990. Anyway hope that clears up how and why music is able to be sampled.And btw, SoM does not legally have to give a nod to TC unless they chose to, which would be the respectful thing to do...but because they paid for the rights to use TC's music...they then own those rights and that sample they paid for becomes theres to do what they want with, without any legal obligation to give a nod to TC. anyway just fyi
