Yes indeed. Sonic Youth even arranged a record deal with SubPop for Nirvana and in reverse all of the "grunge" bands adored Sonic Youth. This idea of bands being opponents is mainly a press thing. The Beatles & The Rolling Stones were good friends (The Beatles even wrote a song for the Stones...), but still i hear this Beatles Vs. Stones discussion...
