This song is good for my soul and my heart. Always makes me feel like I can let go a little and just be OK with myself for four and a half minutes.

We used to call this 'No Depression' music, from Uncle Tupelo's album.

Mike Casey!! Absolute truth man!! Tight pants and stupid hats have very nearly killed "Country Music". Pedal steels, banjos, three chords and the truth is all that is required. Jay Farrar is one of the giant misunderstood and/or overlooked geniuses of MUSIC/POETRY in the past 50+ years.

Our radio stations in Nashville cannot seem to play enough STP, Three Doors Down, 38 Special, Skynyrd, Alice in chains, etc... It's like people never get tired of that stuff. Those are all bands with songs that I really liked at one time in my life. This song, though, is in a different category, entirely. It is beautiful and timeless. It comes for. One of the best albums recorded in the 90's. I never hear it on the radio. We are doomed.

MumblingLucy: It's kinda funny how pretty much the exact same thing is true for mainstream Rap/HipHop and Pop these days!!

Honest question: isn't it "Americana"? Because I found it in a best-of Americana top ten list... Whatever it is, it is fantastic music and I am saying that as a progressive and metal head.

I mean the main reason i stay away from country (of today) is because the lyrics are shit and generally dont really talk about anything worth talking about. Now this, this is great.

Don't worry about the label. Just appreciate Jay's amazing voice, and be grateful we have ears. ;)

The greatest respect to this song and "Windfall": Steve Earle covers them both!

Mike! Where do you hang out? We have the same tastes, I believe.

This is the big fuck you song for all of the haters out there who try to keep you down. Freedom never sounded more true nor sweeter.

One of the best songs ever, along with "windfall"

I agree completely Mike. Most modern country is crap. It's mostly cut from a template. ...I ride a John Deere tractor...I drink Bud....I ride a pick-up truck. Who gives a shit. All the bands you mentioned are great, although I need to give Wilco more of a listen. Off the top of my head I would add Otis Gibbs and Old Crow Medicine Show.
