This performance, recorded in 1996, was a milestone in the evolution of so-called "alternative country" music (sometimes referred to as Americana.) Jay Farrar, along with Jeff Tweedy, were founding members of the legendary band Uncle Tupelo. Following the band's break-up, songwriter and guitarist Farrar forged ahead into new musical territory, putting together drummer Mike Heidorn and multi-talented brothers, guitarist Dave and bassist Jim Boquist, to create Son Volt.

If you don't have it - You must get Son Volt's album called Trace. Came out before this one. Absolutely Brilliant!! Still one of my favorite albums almost 20 years in.

Yes. The band Farrar plays with now called "Son Volt" sucks compared to the original lineup with the Boquist brothers. The Boquist brothers were much better musicians and the sound was so much tighter and just. ........ Better.

Alas, these guys came along too soon. Nobody knew what to make of them. Various descriptions, country rock, alternative country, modern country rock, etc. they got lost in the mid 90s anything goes, alternative rock

Saw them with my friend, Bob Levy, who photographed one of their album covers at the Chameleon in Lancaster, Pa. He introduced me to them and showed Jim Boquist some of my artwork too. Humble and accomplished musicians.
