Saw Son Volt at Red Rocks in May of 1999 shortly before Farrar disbanded the original lineup. They opened up for some hillbilly from Indiana.

If learning is living, and the truth is a state of mindYou'll find it's better at the end of the line.

Ste. Genevieve is a small town in southeast Missouri, south of St. Louis along the Mississippi River. It's one of the oldest towns in the U.S. west of the Mississippi. There was a great effort to save it from flooding in about '93 (if memory serves me well). But that's just a minor reference. The song is really about loss.

@thunderFence In part at least its about a town called St Genevieve (southern part of USA) that was flooded. There is more to it however. Its also a song for a friend who you would meet anytime or anywhere. Whatever it cost you. Great song.

Are they all gone? How about the Be Good Tanya's and the Wood Brothers.

There once was a great period- where we got Son Volt, Old 97s, the Jayhawks and some others like them- I miss this music.
