Soldiers Joy is a really old tune from around the 1760's, it's been played in Scotland for over 200 years and is one of the staple American fiddle tunes. Soldiers joy was a mixture of beer, whisky and morphine, which was used to numb pain for wounded American Civil War soldiers.

This is a tune every banjo player, clawhammer or otherwise, should know... good job Bill! (The title is totally ironic... cuz' there was no joy, only misery for those poor lads... and the "joyful" connoction used to make the pain "bearable" was crude at best. The death toll from that awful war has been revised up to 750,000... about 5% of the entire population as i recall.)
