I am so impressed by the outstanding playing of fellow pianist Doug McKenzie (Jazz2511) and his fantastic annotations explaining what he is doing that I thought I'd give it a try. Wow! I have a new respect for you Doug! It's a lot of work to try to put into words what is going on in the music. Well anyway, here is my effort using the classic Miles tune Solar. I know all the parts that aren't annotated are the ones you really want to know about - but at least here is a start.

Clark Terry, one of the most personal and original voices on any instrument, explained it best. "You've got to Imitate and assimilate before you can innovate. Clifford Brown started out by copping Fats Navarro, Miles idolized Dizzy and Bird. The list goes on and on, just like you started out simply imitating things you heard your parents say as a baby; once you assimilated enough of the English language you learned to construct your own ideas, sentences, and communicate.

this is spectacular. I really enjoyed the different colors you explored on this, the blues ideas, the bebop phrases, the quartal Tyner/Evans esque modern sound, (especially the block chord thing you did with the 3/2 poly-rhythm) and I really liked how you kept a strong sense of the tune's melody throughout!

@MrMUTHAMILLSAPP You first need to understand the 'lingo' before you can know when you are making your own 'lingo

This is terrific; a "candy store" of ideas, harmonic, melodic, rhythmic, phrasing (and great "energy").

@PolyMathey What so many people find so hard to understand is that a jazz solo is is entirely explainable and calculated by the musician. It doesn't seem that way to somebody who hasn't spent their whole lives practicing but the fact is that a good jazz musician chooses between thousands of things they have already done before and constructs a solo by stringing them together in a way that makes sense. This pianist obviously understands that. Nice job!

@oldwarcraftgamer Wow what an amazing question of depth. If welcomed, I would like to add; There is a humaness universal to us all but also uniqueness to each alone. It is a contradiction to typcial theory but to me music is defined less by chords and more so by rythm. Each individual, family, genre, culture, region, nation, has it own unique rhythm. So yes we are exploring ourself but to do so we must explore others in our own individually unique way. I can't know myself without knowing others.
