I like the cover from Agalloch even better, but the original is awesome as well.

I still tell them "Fuck you, go die", though.

I don't really mind being "mean" or even being called "close minded" (an open mind is like a fortress with its gates unbarred and doors wide open) but I do have rather firm grasp on "subjective" vs. "objective." One's aesthetics are one's aesthetics.

The vocals here are meant to sound like they do. Just like death growls are meant to sound harsh. This is neo-folk; what did you expect? Fucking Opera vocals? It's not that Agalloch's vocals have "more depth" or are "better", they're just different styles. A cover isn't meant to be an "improvement", if anything, a cover is done because the band likes the original artist enough to give tribute, so if you like Agalloch so much, do them a favour and stop indirectly insulting their taste in music.

This is the same kinda thing as the cover of "Sleepless" by Cradle of Filth, the original song by Anathema. I fucking hate the cover. I think it's terrible, I don't like Cradle of Filth, but the original is one of my favourite songs; a lot of people say the cover is better, though. Fucking blasphemy in my point of view, but it's all subjective, I have no right to tell them "fuck you, go die", 'cause that would be mean and close-minded.

There is no comparison to be made. Agalloch cover this song in a completely different style and genre of music, so it's down to preference rather than who's better than who.

This is such a beautiful song, yet heart wrenching at the same time. I like this version better than their other one but even with the other version, it's one of the most intelligent songs out there. I really love Agalloch's cover as well.

I disagree with your view on Agalloch's cover. The slightly slower pace and the clearer sound does (for me) that the whole point in the song stands more out. The vocal work and arrangements in Agalloch's version have a lot of depth; here they seem hasty and not worked very well through. Just my 2 cents. :)

Ha. No no, obviously my subjective appreciation of aesthetics is the universal & absolute way to understanding these aesthetics. Don't you have things to do? Enjoy the song. If you don't listen to a different one.

I hate to break it this way but I like haughm's voice way better... besides his rythm when singing is just superior. besides that, I like the way the synths work in agalloch's version, which just happens to beat the atmosphere sol invictus creates.
